What to Do Now
First steps while you wait to be seen.
Knocked-Out Adult Tooth
Hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse briefly in milk, push it back into the socket if you can, or keep it in milk. Get seen within the hour.
Severe Toothache
Take ordinary painkillers as directed on the pack. Avoid very hot or cold food. Call us for an appointment.
Swelling
Call us the same day. If it's spreading quickly or affecting breathing or swallowing, go to A&E.
Broken Tooth or Filling
Keep any pieces. Rinse with warm water. Sugar-free gum can cover a sharp edge for now.
Lost Crown
Keep the crown safe and bring it with you. Don't glue it back yourself.
Bleeding After an Extraction
Bite firmly on a clean, damp gauze or tissue for 20 minutes. If it continues, call us.
At Your Emergency Appointment
The aim is to get you out of pain at the same visit.
Book or Call
Same-day appointments, Monday to Friday, for patients and non-patients. New patients can book online straight away.
Find the Cause
Your dentist examines the tooth, with an X-ray if it's needed, and explains what's wrong.
Relieve the Pain
Usually at the same visit: a dressing, a temporary filling, easing an infection or starting root canal treatment.
A Plan for What's Next
We explain the options and fees for the permanent fix, so you can decide without pressure.
Emergencies We See Every Week
If you're not sure whether it's an emergency, call us and we'll tell you.
Toothache and Abscesses
Throbbing pain, swelling or a bad taste, often from a deep cavity or a cracked tooth. What to do about an abscess
Broken or Chipped Teeth
From a small chip to a tooth that has split. Keep any pieces and bring them. What to do about a broken tooth
Lost Crowns and Fillings
Re-cemented or replaced, and the tooth protected until then.
Knocked-Out Teeth
Time matters most. Follow the steps above and get to us within the hour.
Wisdom Tooth Pain
Swollen, sore gum around a wisdom tooth, sometimes with a stiff jaw. About wisdom teeth
Implants, Bridges and Dentures
A loose implant crown, a broken bridge or a cracked denture. Jaw aching or clicking? Jaw pain and TMJ
Do I Need Antibiotics?
Usually not. Antibiotics don't treat the cause of most toothache, and they're only needed when an infection is spreading or you feel unwell. Lasting relief comes from treating the tooth itself, with a filling, root canal treatment or, if it can't be saved, removing it.
Out of Hours
Dental plan members have out-of-hours cover included in their plan. Everyone else can call NHS 24 on 111.
Emergency Fees
Emergency appointment £70, for patients and non-patients. Free for dental plan members.2
