Good to Know
When We Won't Whiten
How It Works
Yellowish teeth usually respond best. Grey staining lightens more slowly, and we'll tell you what to expect.
A Dental Examination First
We check for decay and gum disease, and note any fillings, crowns or veneers, which won't change colour.
A Scan for Your Trays
A quick 3D scan of your teeth, with no putty. Your trays are made to fit your teeth exactly.
Fitting and Instructions
We fit the trays, show you how much gel to use and for how long, and record your starting shade.
Whitening at Home
Usually two to three weeks, wearing your trays for a short time each day.
Review
We compare your new shade with where you started, and talk about keeping it.
Dentist Whitening or a Shop Kit?
UK law sets what each can contain, and who can provide it.
| Feature | Dentist whitening | Shop kits |
|---|---|---|
| Gel strength | Professional strength, within the UK limit of 6% hydrogen peroxide | No more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide |
| What it does | Lightens the colour of the teeth from within | Mainly removes surface stain |
| Trays | Made from a scan of your teeth | One size fits all, or none |
| Before you start | Your dentist checks your teeth and gums | No check |
| Who can provide it | Only a dentist, or a hygienist or therapist on a dentist's prescription | Sold in shops. Whitening in beauty salons is illegal in the UK |
How Long It Lasts
Usually a year or more, depending on what you eat and drink and whether you smoke. Keep your trays and top up with more gel when you need to.
