Root Canal Treatment in Glasgow: Root Canal Treatment, to Save Your Tooth

Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, then cleans and seals it, so you keep your own tooth. It's done under local anaesthetic and feels much like having a filling.

From £450 for a front tooth to £595 for a molar, or £405 to £536 for dental plan members.2

Signs You May Need One

Sometimes there are no symptoms at all, and the problem shows up on an X-ray at a dental examination.

Lingering Toothache

Pain that throbs, keeps you awake or comes back without a reason.

Sensitivity to Hot

Hot food or drink that still hurts after you've swallowed it.

Pain When You Bite

Tenderness when chewing or pressing on the tooth.

Swelling or a Gum Boil

A swelling or a small spot on the gum near the tooth.

A Darkening Tooth

A tooth that turns grey or darker after a knock.

Deep Decay or a Crack

Damage that has reached, or come close to, the nerve.

How It Works

Usually one or two visits.

Examination and X-Ray

We find the cause and explain your options, including the fee, before anything is done.

2

Cleaning the Canals

The tooth is numbed, the infected tissue is removed, and the canals are cleaned and shaped. A very painful tooth is dressed first and finished at a second visit.

3

Sealing and Restoring

The canals are filled and sealed. The tooth is then restored with a filling, and back teeth usually with an onlay or crown.

Root Canal or Extraction?

Keeping your own tooth is usually better, and costs less in the long run than taking it out and replacing it.

A well-restored root-filled tooth can last for decades

It avoids the cost of an implant or bridge

After Treatment

Some tenderness for a few days is normal, eased with ordinary painkillers. Most people go back to work the same day
Avoid chewing hard food on the tooth until it's fully restored
A temporary filling may be placed between visits. Keep the area clean

Does It Last?

Most root canal treatments are successful, and a well-restored tooth can last for decades. A back tooth usually needs an onlay or crown to stop it cracking.

If an old root filling fails, the tooth can often be treated again. Repeat treatment is from £595. For a complex tooth, your dentist may suggest a CT scan, which shows the canals in 3D.

Antibiotics alone won't fix an infected tooth. They're only needed if infection is spreading, and the tooth still needs treatment.
