Professional cleaning, air polishing and gum treatment with our dental therapists, Bronagh O'Dowd and Anisha Pariyarath. The foundation of every healthy smile.

Hygiene visit £70, or £100 with air polishing. Included in dental plans.

What Happens at a Hygiene Visit

Usually 30 minutes, or 60 for a deep clean.

Gum Check

We measure your gums and look for early signs of gum disease.

Scaling

Tartar is removed from above and just below the gum line.

Air Polishing

Airflow lifts plaque and stain with warm water, air and fine powder.

Your Plan at Home

We show you exactly what to focus on, and which brushes to use.

Air Polishing

Gentler, Faster, Brighter

Air polishing, often known by the brand name Airflow, uses a fine stream of warm water, air and powder instead of a gritty paste. It removes plaque and stain gently, reaches around implants, bridges and braces, and most people find it more comfortable.

Included in every hygiene visit on our dental plans.

Periodontal Therapy

Treatment for Gum Disease

When gum disease has reached the bone, we treat it in stages with deep cleaning below the gum line.

Assessment. Pocket measurements and X-rays, staged and graded using the British Society of Periodontology system.
Deep cleaning in stages. Usually four stages, one for each area of the mouth, under local anaesthetic. £100 per stage.
Re-assessment. A few months later, to check your gums have healed.
Maintenance. Regular hygiene visits, often every three months, to keep it stable. Plan B includes four a year.

Signs You Need a Hygiene Visit

Gum disease is often painless in its early stages, so regular visits matter even when nothing hurts.

Bleeding Gums

Bleeding when you brush or floss is the most common early sign of gum inflammation.

Bad Breath

Breath that doesn't freshen with brushing can come from plaque below the gum line.

Tartar Build-Up

Hardened plaque can't be brushed away and needs professional cleaning.

Receding Gums

Teeth that look longer, or feel sensitive at the gum line.

Implants, Bridges and Braces

They need extra care to keep the gum around them healthy.

Pregnancy

Hormone changes can make gums swollen and more likely to bleed.

Looking After Your Gums

Brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste
Clean between your teeth every day, ideally with interdental brushes
Spit after brushing, but don't rinse, so the fluoride keeps working
An electric toothbrush can make thorough brushing easier
If you smoke, stopping makes a big difference. Smoking can hide the bleeding that warns of gum disease

Your Gums and Your General Health

Gum disease is linked with diabetes: each can make the other harder to control. Keeping your gums healthy is part of looking after your health, not just your teeth.

If you have diabetes, are pregnant, or take medicines that affect your gums, tell us. We'll suggest how often to come in.

Questions People Ask

More in our hygiene guides.

How often should I see the dental therapist?–
Usually every three to six months, depending on your gums. People with gum disease often benefit from every three months. With implants or a full-arch bridge it's every three months, four visits a year, and keeping to that is a condition of our implant guarantee. We'll recommend the right interval for you once we've checked your gums at your first visit.
