Gum Disease Treatment in Glasgow: Bleeding Gums, Treated Properly

Gingivitis and periodontitis assessed, treated in stages and kept under control by our dental therapists, Bronagh O'Dowd and Anisha Pariyarath, with Airflow cleaning and a plan for keeping it away.

Hygiene visit £70, deep clean £130, gum treatment £100 per stage over four stages, or 10% less for dental plan members, whose hygiene visits are included.2

The Signs

Gum disease rarely hurts until it's advanced. These are the early signs people ignore.

Bleeding When You Brush

Healthy gums don't bleed. Pink in the sink is the first sign of gingivitis, not a sign to brush more gently.

Red, Swollen or Tender Gums

Inflammation at the gum line where plaque sits.

Bad Breath or a Bad Taste

Bacteria under the gum produce it, and mouthwash only masks it.

Receding Gums

Teeth that look longer, with sensitive exposed roots.

Loose or Drifting Teeth

Bone loss lets teeth move, and gaps open between front teeth.

Gum Disease and the Rest of You

Periodontitis is linked in research with diabetes, heart disease and pregnancy complications, and it's harder to control implants and diabetes while gums are inflamed.

Gingivitis or Periodontitis?

Same cause, different stages, different treatment.

Gingivitis: inflamed gums with no bone loss. Fully reversible with a professional clean and better cleaning at home
Periodontitis: inflammation has reached the bone and the gum has pulled away, leaving pockets. The bone doesn't grow back, but the disease can be stopped
Smoking, diabetes, stress and some medicines make it worse and slower to treat
Measuring the pockets around every tooth tells us which you have and how far it has gone

How It Works

1

Assessment

Your gums are measured around every tooth, X-rays show the bone, and you get a gum score and an honest picture of where you are.

2

Hygiene Phase

A thorough professional clean above and just below the gum line, with Airflow to remove staining and plaque, and the home cleaning that will make the difference shown to you with your own teeth.

3

Gum Treatment in Stages

For periodontitis, deep cleaning of the pockets below the gum under local anaesthetic, a section of the mouth at a time over four stages (£100 each).

4

Review and Maintenance

Pockets re-measured to see what has healed, then hygiene visits every three months, because gum disease comes back when plaque does.

Why It's Worth Treating

Gum disease is the commonest reason adults lose teeth, and it's largely preventable. Treated early, gingivitis goes away completely. Treated at the periodontitis stage, the bone that's lost doesn't return, but the disease can be stopped and the teeth kept for decades.

It matters for everything else we do, too. Implants need healthy gums, crowns and bridges rely on the teeth that carry them, and Invisalign moves teeth through healthy bone. That's why gum treatment comes first in any plan here.

Gum treatment is included in what our dental therapists do day to day. Hygiene visits are part of both dental plans, and plan members pay 10% less for the deep clean and gum treatment stages.

At Home

Clean between your teeth every day with interdental brushes sized for your gaps; this matters more than anything else
Brush for two minutes twice a day along the gum line, with an electric toothbrush if you can
Bleeding means keep going, gently, not stop; it settles within a week or two of proper cleaning
Stop smoking: smokers' gums heal slowly and hide the bleeding that would warn you
If you have diabetes, keeping your blood sugar controlled helps your gums, and healthy gums help your blood sugar
Keep every three-monthly visit; the gap between them is when disease restarts
