Composite Bonding Guide
What it is, who it suits, how it's done, how long it lasts, what it costs, and how it compares with veneers.
How Much Does Composite Bonding Cost in Glasgow?
At St Vincent Smile in Finnieston, Glasgow, composite bonding is £395 per tooth, with packages of £1,550 for four teeth, £2,350 for six, £3,150 for eight and £3,950 for ten, each including whitening, a review and a final polish. Tooth-coloured composite is layered by hand to repair chips, close gaps and reshape worn or uneven teeth. It usually takes one or two visits, most people need no injection, little or no enamel is removed, and it lasts three to five years on average before a refresh. Consultations with Dr Umer Hameed are free.
What Is Composite Bonding?
Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to reshape teeth. Your dentist adds it to the surface in thin layers, in different shades and translucencies, sculpts it by hand, then polishes it to match the shine of natural enamel. Each tooth is shaped around your face and the proportions of your smile, so the result looks like teeth rather than like bonding.
Because it's added rather than removed, little or no enamel is drilled away in most cases. Where a small amount is, it gives a seamless transition from your natural tooth to the composite and a larger surface to bond to, for strength and longevity. Your dentist will discuss your own case with you. Keeping your natural teeth is the main reason people choose bonding over porcelain veneers.
There are two kinds. Edge bonding adds small amounts to chipped corners and worn edges. Composite veneers cover the whole front surface of each tooth, to change shape and colour across the smile. Both are priced per tooth, and both are built the same way.
What Bonding Can Fix
Bonding works best for small to moderate changes. It's usually a good fit if you have:
- Chipped or worn front teeth
- Small gaps between teeth
- Uneven edges, or teeth that look short
- One or two teeth that are a different shape to the rest
- White or dark spots on the enamel that you'd like masked
- Old composite veneers that have stained, chipped or never looked natural
It's less suited to heavily crowded teeth, which are usually better straightened first with aligners, or to people who grind heavily, as composite can chip. Decay or gum disease is treated first, so the bonding sits on healthy teeth and lasts. If you're not sure whether bonding would work for you, a photo in natural light is enough for a dentist to tell you what's possible.

How It's Done, Step by Step
- Consultation. Photographs, a shade check and a conversation about the shape you'd like. We may show you a digital preview, and for larger cases a trial smile can be placed over your teeth. The consultation is free, with a £40 deposit refunded within 7 days of attending, and you leave with a written plan and a fixed fee.
- Whitening, if you want it. Composite doesn't change colour once placed, so we whiten first, over two to three weeks at home with custom trays, then wait around two weeks for the shade to settle. Most people choose a natural B1 shade.
- The bonding appointment. Edge bonding usually takes one visit, and composite veneers one or two. The teeth are isolated and kept dry, the surface is cleaned and lightly prepared, then composite is built up by hand in layers, each one set with a blue light, before being shaped and polished. Most people don't need an injection.
- A review two weeks later. We check your bite and give the bonding a final polish.
What It Costs in Glasgow
| Teeth | Typically covers | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A single chip, worn edge or small gap | £395 |
| 4 | The four front teeth | £1,550 |
| 6 | The front six, seen when you talk | £2,350 |
| 8 | Out to the first premolars | £3,150 |
| 10 | The full width of a broad smile | £3,950 |
Every package includes home whitening, a review appointment and a final polish, and composite veneers are priced the same way.2 Your exact fee is confirmed in writing at your consultation, and it doesn't change once treatment starts. Bonding isn't included in the dental plan discount.
Treatment of £1,500 or more can be spread through Chrysalis Finance, subject to status: interest free over 6 or 12 months, or 12 to 60 months at 14.9% APR representative, with a deposit optional. Our finance page has the terms, and our packages guide explains which teeth each package covers.
How Glasgow compares. In October 2026 we checked the published prices of more than forty Glasgow practices. Where a bonding price is published at all, it runs from about £95 to £370 a tooth, with most between £190 and £300, and almost none of those figures include whitening, a review visit or a polish. Several practices quote one price on the treatment page and a different one on their fee list, so ask for the figure in writing. Our single-tooth fee sits at the top of that range. The packages are where the comparison changes: four teeth with whitening is £1,550, which is £300 a tooth for the bonding once the £350 of whitening is taken out, with the review and the polish included and one dentist with a special interest in bonding doing all of it.
How Long It Lasts
Most bonding lasts three to five years on average before it needs a refresh, and it can last longer. The things that shorten its life are biting hard objects such as pens and nails, grinding at night, and heavy staining from tea, coffee, red wine, turmeric or smoking. Composite stains over time in much the same way as natural teeth, and a polish at your hygiene visits lifts most of it.
If a corner chips, it can usually be repaired in one short visit without replacing the whole tooth, which is one of composite's real advantages over porcelain. A refresh, when it's needed, usually means re-polishing or replacing the outer layer rather than starting again. We'll tell you honestly how long to expect in your case, because a heavy grinder and a careful non-smoker will get different years from the same bonding.
Bonding or Porcelain Veneers?
| Feature | Composite bonding | Porcelain veneers |
|---|---|---|
| Tooth preparation | Little or none | A thin layer of enamel, usually |
| Visits | One or two | Three, including a trial smile |
| Typical lifespan | 3 to 5 years on average | Often 10 to 15 years or more |
| Staining | Can stain over time | Highly stain-resistant |
| Repairs | Chips usually repaired in one visit | Usually remade |
| Fee | From £395 per tooth | From £695 per tooth |
If you want a gentle, conservative change, bonding is usually the place to start. For a long-term transformation of several teeth, or to hide very dark or heavily filled teeth, porcelain may be the better investment. Our guide to porcelain and composite veneers goes into more detail.
Looking After It
- Brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste, and clean between your teeth daily. Avoid whitening toothpastes, which dull composite
- Don't bite pens, nails or hard sweets with bonded teeth, and don't open packets with them
- Wear your retainer or a night guard at night, to protect the bonding and stop your teeth moving. A custom night guard is £210
- Keep your hygiene visits, where bonding is polished
- Rinse with water after tea, coffee or red wine
Our bonding care guide covers all of this in more detail, including what to do if a corner chips.
