Invisalign or Home Kits?

How in-practice Invisalign and remote at-home aligner treatment differ, what that means for your teeth, and what to check before you buy either.

The short answer

Is Invisalign Better Than at-Home Aligners?

Invisalign treatment at a dental practice includes an in-person examination, X-rays, a 3D scan and regular dental examinations, so problems such as gum disease or decay are found before and during treatment, and the plan can be adjusted face to face. At-home aligners are usually planned remotely, with no examination in the chair. At St Vincent Smile in Finnieston, Glasgow, Invisalign starts from £3,750, including refinements, Vivera retainers and whitening, and the consultation is free.

Both use clear plastic aligners, and both rely on the same biology: gentle pressure that lets bone remodel around the roots. The difference is everything around the aligners. With Invisalign at a practice, a dentist examines you, takes X-rays and a scan, plans the movement, bonds attachments where they're needed, checks you every 6 to 8 weeks and adjusts the plan if your teeth don't follow it. With at-home aligners, most of that happens remotely, or not at all.

Why Does an Examination Matter?

Straightening teeth is dental treatment, not a product. Moving teeth with untreated gum disease or decay can make both worse: inflamed gums lose bone faster when teeth are pushed through them, and a cavity ignored for a year of treatment becomes a bigger problem. An examination and X-rays also check the roots, the bone around them, existing crowns and fillings, and your bite, all of which affect how teeth can safely be moved.

At St Vincent Smile, Dr Davinder Kalsi examines your teeth and gums at your free consultation before anything is planned. If something needs treating first, you'll know at that visit. A photograph and a home impression kit can't tell anyone what's happening under the gum.

How the Scan and the Plan Differ

In practice, your teeth are scanned on an iTero Lumina, a digital scanner that builds a precise 3D model in a few minutes, with no putty. The simulation and the stage-by-stage plan are built on that scan, and the fit of every aligner depends on its accuracy. Home impression kits rely on you taking a good putty impression of your own teeth at the kitchen table, and a poor impression means poorly fitting aligners.

Some tooth movements also need a dentist in the chair. Attachments, the small tooth-coloured bumps that give aligners grip, are bonded to the teeth, and occasionally a fraction of a millimetre is polished from between teeth to create space. Remote-only treatment usually can't include either, which limits it to simpler movements, and it's one reason some at-home cases don't finish where the plan said they would.

Examinations and Refinements

You'll see us every 6 to 8 weeks. We check that your teeth are tracking with the plan, look at the attachments and your gums, and hand over your next aligners. If a tooth lags behind, we can catch it early rather than at the end. And if your teeth need fine-tuning once the main set is finished, refinements, the extra aligners that do that, are included in your package.

Remote monitoring by photograph can spot some problems, but it can't feel whether an aligner is seating fully, test how your teeth meet, or notice early gum changes. Those are the things that decide whether treatment ends well.

What If Something Goes Wrong?

With in-practice treatment, your dentist can adjust the plan, add refinements or deal with problems face to face, and is responsible for your care from start to finish. If an aligner cracks, a tooth stops moving, or your bite feels wrong, you have someone to see.

With at-home aligners, support depends on the company. One of the largest at-home aligner companies closed in 2023, leaving many patients without support part-way through treatment, some of them with aligners that no longer fitted and no retainers to come. A practice can't simply pick up another company's plan, so those people needed a new assessment and, usually, a new course of treatment.

What Does Invisalign Cost?

From £3,750 for Lite to £5,250 for Comprehensive Plus, depending on how far your teeth need to move. Every package includes refinements, Vivera retainers, whitening, scans and X-rays, and a hygiene visit.2 The consultation is free, with a £40 deposit refunded within 7 days of attending, and the fee is fixed in writing before you start. Our Invisalign cost guide explains the four packages.

At-home aligners are often cheaper up front. Before you compare, add up what isn't in the headline price: an examination and X-rays, retainers at the end, refinements if the first set doesn't finish the job, and dental examinations. Treatment of £1,500 or more here can be spread through Chrysalis Finance, interest free over 6 or 12 months, subject to status. See finance for the terms.

Started with a Home Kit?

If you've started remote aligners and you're worried, in pain, or your teeth aren't moving, book a free consultation. Bring whatever records you have. We'll examine your teeth and gums, take an iTero Lumina scan to see where things stand, and explain the options honestly. Because aligners are made to one specific plan, we can't continue another company's aligners, so the options usually mean a new plan, which may be shorter than you expect if a lot of the movement is already done. Whatever you decide, you'll leave knowing what state your teeth are in, which is the thing remote treatment can't give you. Our guide to Invisalign for adults explains what treatment here involves.

Questions

Are at-home aligners cheaper?Often at first. Compare what's included, especially an examination and X-rays, retainers at the end, refinements if your teeth need extra aligners, and dental examinations during treatment. All of those are in every Invisalign package at St Vincent Smile.
How often will I see you?Usually every 6 to 8 weeks. Each review checks that your teeth are tracking with the plan and that your gums are healthy, and you collect your next sets of aligners. Between visits you change aligners at home every one to two weeks.
Is Invisalign the same as at-home aligners? No. Invisalign is made by Align Technology and provided through trained dentists and orthodontists, with an in-person examination, scan and reviews. At-home aligner companies sell their own aligners, usually planned from a home impression kit or a scan shop, with little or no in-person care.
Do at-home aligners work? They can move teeth, particularly for simple spacing or mild crowding, because the plastic does the same job. The risks are in what's missed: untreated gum disease or decay, movements that need attachments, and nobody checking progress in person. That's where cases go wrong.
Who is allowed to straighten teeth in the UK?Tooth movement is dentistry, so in the UK aligners must be prescribed by a dentist registered with the General Dental Council, whoever sells them. What varies is whether that dentist actually examines you in person. You can check any dentist's registration on the GDC's online register.

This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. A dentist needs to examine you to say what is right for your teeth.
