If an implant hurts, feels loose or doesn't look right, it's worth having it checked, wherever it was placed. Many implant problems can be put right, and a loose crown or screw is often a straightforward fix. We'll examine it, take X-rays if they're needed at the time, and tell you plainly what's going on and what your options are.

The consultation is free, with a £40 deposit refunded within 7 days of attending. A CT scan, if you need one, is £160. Any treatment is priced in writing before it starts.2

Signs Worth Getting Checked

None of these means an implant has failed. They mean it's time someone looked at it properly.

Pain, tenderness or swelling around an implant
Gum that bleeds when you brush, or has started to recede from the implant
A bad taste, or discharge from the gum around it
A crown that moves, clicks or feels different when you bite
An implant that feels loose
A chipped or cracked implant crown
Food packing between the implant crown and the tooth next to it
Bone loss around the implant on an X-ray, which you won't feel but an examination shows

A loose crown or a loose screw is often fixable, sometimes in a single visit. A loose implant, where the implant itself moves in the bone, needs seeing promptly: book in soon rather than waiting to see if it settles.

Get urgent help if you have swelling that is spreading, a high temperature, or difficulty swallowing: call NHS 24 on 111. If the swelling affects your breathing, call 999. During our opening hours, see our emergency dental appointments.

Common Causes

Peri-Implantitis

Infection of the gum and bone around an implant, the implant version of gum disease. It's more likely with smoking, a history of gum disease, or plaque that's hard to reach.

A Loose or Broken Screw

The small screw that holds the crown to the implant can loosen or break, often from heavy biting.

A Worn or Cracked Crown or Abutment

The crown, or the connecting part beneath it, can chip, crack or wear over the years.

An Implant That Didn't Bond

Sometimes an implant never fuses with the bone in the first weeks or months, and stays mobile.

Bite Overload or Grinding

Too much force on an implant, from the bite or from grinding at night, can loosen parts and strain the bone around it.

A Poorly Placed Implant

An implant at the wrong angle or depth can leave a crown that's hard to clean or that takes the bite badly.

At Your Consultation

Free, here in Finnieston, with Dr Kalsi.

We examine the implant, the gum around it and your bite, and take X-rays if they're needed at the time. If we need to see the bone in three dimensions, a CT scan is £160, taken on our own scanner at the same visit.

We'll try to identify the implant system from your records, the X-rays or an implant passport or card. Bring anything you have: the card, treatment notes, X-rays, invoices, or the clinic's name and address. This matters most if the implant was placed abroad.

Parts for some implant systems are hard to get, particularly some used abroad or no longer made. If the right screw or connecting part can't be found, the crown, or sometimes the implant itself, may need to be replaced rather than repaired. We'll tell you this at the consultation, before anything is done.

You leave with your options explained and a written fee for the one you choose.

Our Guarantee

Implants we place carry our guarantee: 5-year guarantee for non-smokers who attend hygiene visits every 3 months. It covers implants placed here, so it can't cover work done elsewhere, including abroad. If we place a new implant for you, we'll explain at your consultation what it would carry.

If your implant was placed abroad, our guides to dental implants abroad and why implants fail and how to lower the risk cover the background. We're at 23C St Vincent Crescent in Finnieston, about four minutes' walk from Exhibition Centre station, with pay-and-display parking outside.

Questions

Implants placed here or abroad, guarantees and costs.

Can you fix a dental implant done in Turkey?–
Often, yes. We assess implants placed abroad in the same way as our own: an examination, X-rays if they're needed at the time and, if you need one, a CT scan, then an honest view of what can be repaired. Parts for some systems used abroad are hard to get, so sometimes the crown or the implant has to be replaced rather than repaired, and we'll tell you that before anything is done.
